MEET THE MERCHANT: LEATHER LAB

MEET THE MERCHANT: LEATHER LAB

We’re so excited to share our fifth feature, in the Meet the Merchant, at Lonsdale Quay Market: Leather Lab.

We love all of our vendors and want to share their exciting stories of how they came to be. Plus some intimate details you may not have known otherwise!

When you enter Leather Lab, you’re greeted with an array of styles, including the closet staple: the leather jacket. These jackets are made from an incredibly supple lambskin leather in both men and women’s designs. Each piece is designed in Europe and hand-sewn in India.

What makes Leather Lab so unique is that they are one of the few brick and mortar shops to exclusively sell high-quality leather jackets. Another factor that they pride themselves in is that their jackets, normally sell in other boutiques for roughly $500-$600, are all one set price at Lonsdale Quay Market: $299 plus taxes.

If you stroll in and see a fashionably dressed male, it would most likely be the shop owner, Rez. He’s been in the fashion industry for over 28 years selling dresses and tops. Prior to opening Leather Lab, he was determined to find a manufacturer that was hiring labour ethnically, which meant no child labour. Additionally, he wanted to meet the designers and see these factories first hand. What he discovered was that each leather jacket was meticulously hand-sewn by workers that had what appeared to be, years of experience. Further, the particular manufacturer that he decided on made sure to keep production on during all seasons. This was to ensure that the villagers always had steady employment, even during the really slow retail seasons. This showed innate care for their workers, which Rez was happy about.

Rez envisions a future where he will be able to give back a percentage of profit to donate to the underprivileged in India as he has some roots that tie him there. If you’d like to learn more about Rez, make sure to stop by!
