MEET THE MERCHANT: ANDY, C41 MINIMALIST COFFEE SHOP

We’re so excited to share our fourth feature, in the Meet the Merchant series, at Lonsdale Quay Market: Andy, the owner from the minimalist coffee shop, C41.

Nestled between the busy Market Level is an open-spaced, minimalistic coffee shop. Here, you’re able to order an array of delicious pastries including almond cookies, a variety of donuts and other delectables. You can pair your pastries with one of Andy’s coffees or matcha drink.

At first glance at his coffee board menu, one may be intimidated, or confused. But, this on purpose: to reconsider the traditional names for coffee drinks.

  • My Black and White is a drink with espresso and milk
  • Sweet Presso is espresso
  • Gold Cup Auto Pour Brew is slow drip coffee

Andy currently sells a signature Australian flat white as his special. The flat white is so delicious that a native Australian came by to tell him that it was the best flat white they’ve ever had! In case you didn’t know, flat whites originated in Australia! Andy also features beans that he uses in plain sight. Some beans include 49th Parallel, Pallet beans, Rooftops, amongst others in rotation.

When talking to Andy, he mentioned that the simplistic design was inspired by Bauhaus. Bauhaus is a school of design philosophy founded by Walter Gropius in Germany in 1919. The school was interested in the philosophy of form follows function which meant their designs were a no-nonsense, bare-bones, utility over the aesthetic type of design. With this in mind, you can see the inspiration for C41’s shop.

The great part about this coffee shop is that it serves drinks in compostable cold cups and recyclable packaging for hot drinks. If you follow C41 on their Instagram, you’ll see beautiful shots of their coffee as well! But what you might not know is that Andy himself used to be a photographer, before opening the shop. Hence, the name C41 was selected as it is a film developing process used about 20 years ago.
