New Year, New “Q” at Lonsdale Quay Market

New Year, New “Q” at Lonsdale Quay Market

NORTH VANCOUVER, BC— After almost 32 years the iconic Q sign at Lonsdale Quay Market is being replaced. Work to replace the sign has now commenced, and is due to be complete January 7, 2018.

The new Q sign will look exactly the same as the original sign and will rotate at a similar speed. The new sign, measuring 18-feet tall and 19-feet wide, will be a lightweight aluminum material, with LED lighting. The new lighting will have a longer life, reduced maintenance requirements, brighter shine, and reduced energy consumption. The sign has also been outfitted with surge protection to prolong the life of the electrical connections.

“The developers of the property wanted the project to be visible from downtown Vancouver”, says architect Norm Hotson who, together with partner Joost Bakker, designed Lonsdale Quay Market in 1985, “so we came up with the idea of the giant Q sign towering above the Market.” Over 60-feet in the air, the Q tower also has an observation deck for visitors to enjoy unobstructed views of the harbour and city skyline.

Once removed from its perch, the original Q sign will be moved into storage, until design for its new home is complete. Lonsdale Quay Market is in preliminary planning for potential redesign of the exterior plazas at the property, and it is the intention to place the original Q on the ground, in a redesigned exterior public space. All costs associated with the new sign are being financed by the property owner, as part of a plan for significant capital improvements over the coming years, to enhance the Market experience for locals and visitors alike.

Over the past nine years significant investment has been made to rebuild the rotator in the Q sign twice, and carryout several repairs and upgrades. Last year it was determined that further mechanical and electrical repairs were no longer viable, and plans to replace the Q proceeded. Lonsdale Quay Market has contracted Landmark Signs to carryout all work to the sign.

Lonsdale Quay Market, part of the Quay Property Management group of companies, is located adjacent to the SeaBus in the heart of Lower Lonsdale, features a fresh food market with local products, an international food court, specialty retail shops showcasing local designers, kids shops and play area, full-service restaurants, and a boutique hotel, with expansive views of the Vancouver harbour and city skyline.
