SummerFest Finale

North Shore Festival Supports Local Charity
Over $2,000.00 Raised for Lions Gate Hospital Foundation

North Vancouver, BC, CANADA – SUMMERFEST 2010 at Lonsdale Quay Market is a celebration of music, culture, summer, and especially of North Shore community.

With the help of the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation team of volunteers and the generosity of festival-goers, Lonsdale Quay Market raised $2,000.00 for the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation this year.

Join us in presenting Rebecca James, fund development coordinator for Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, with a cheque on September 3 at 1pm, on the SummerFest stage on the Waterfront Plaza at Lonsdale Quay Market.

Funds raised by Lonsdale Quay Market and SummerFest 2010 will contribute to the Smart Pumps Campaign, which will see the replacement of the hospital’s entire fleet of general purpose infusion pumps.

Smart Pumps use Dose Error Reduction Software (DERS) which limits the dosage of drugs that can be safely infused into a patient, eliminating the risk of human error inherent in the delivery of medication.

The majority of funds raised for the foundation this year were thank to the Kid’s Fridays Charity BBQ, a new addition to the festival roster in 2010. The BBQ was successful not only in raising $1,500.00 for the foundation, but in providing a tasty, budget-friendly lunch to visitors as well.

Lonsdale Quay Market would like to recognize Sharky’s Artisan Sausages for its contribution to the fundraiser, providing not only delicious meat kebabs, but the esteemed chef to cook them as well. We would also like to thank COBS Bread for supplying hot dog buns, and the Salmon Shop for supplying seafood kebabs.

Visitors to SummerFest also contributed to the fundraiser at the festival booth on Dance Saturdays and Concert Sundays throughout the summer. Market hosts offered face-painting, temporary tattoos, games and activities for kids, and iconic “Q” balloons, all by donation.

Entrants to the REO Rafting Adventure Contest also donated with their ballot entries. The winner will receive an overnight rafting vacation for two people, including meals.

SummerFest 2010 at Lonsdale Quay Market was 11 weeks of fun and entertainment in a beautiful setting, and we look forward to building on this success in 2011.

SummerFest continues until September 5. Be sure to check the schedule of events for all remaining shows and activities at www.lonsdalequay.com/events.cfm

“Lonsdale Quay”

North Vancouver, BC, CANADA –Mr. Palmer’s Grade 5/6 class at Ridgeway Elementary spent a day at Lonsdale Quay Market in May, each creating a piece of art which reflects their impression of Lonsdale Quay and the surrounding area.

The result is 22 individual oil pastel works, titled “Lonsdale Quay”. These works can now be viewed in vacant shop windows on the second level of Lonsdale Quay Market, and will remain on display throughout the summer.

Lonsdale Quay Market strives to support local and student artists, most recently through the installation of “Viewfinder”, a sculpture garden on the East Plaza of the Market. Other community art works include the mosaic fountain, titled “Tidal Waves”, the beautiful mosaic rotunda floor, called “Perspectives”, and the starfish-shaped bench on the waterfront plaza, “Tidal Encounters”.

North Vancouver, BC, CANADA –Lonsdale Quay Market’s East Plaza is the site of a recently completed sculpture garden, created by local student artists. The project is the result of a partnership between Lonsdale Quay Market Corp. and the City of North Vancouver.

Seven local student artists were given the opportunity to create a permanent community art installation this year, under the direction of artist mentor James Koester.

“Viewfinder” consists of 21 galvanized wrought iron sculptures within solid metal frames that appear to hover among the spring rhododendrons along Lonsdale Quay Market’s East Plaza.

“Lonsdale Quay Market is pleased to host this latest community art project in partnership with the City of North Vancouver,” says Taylor Mathiesen, property manager.

“Student artists are given the opportunity to display their work in a public space, while leaving behind a legacy for the community to admire,” says Mathiesen.

Lonsdale Quay Market is home to several public art pieces created by local youth, including the Rotunda mosaic tile floor, the starfish bench on the Waterfront Plaza, the iconic mosaic fountain, and a 100-foot mural, which will be installed in coming months.

A Tower Without Its "Q"

A Tower Without it’s “Q”

A North Shore Landmark

North Vancouver, BC, CANADA What’s a tower without its “Q”? An infamous North Shore landmark, the Lonsdale Quay Market “Q” tower, has undergone construction leaving the tower standing without its “Q”. The 20 foot, 3000 pound, “Q” was removed by crane today from atop the 75 foot tall tower. The “Q” was removed with the intent of repairing the mechanism inside that allows the “Q” to rotate and light up.

The “Q” observation tower has been a North Shore landmark since 1986 when Lonsdale Quay Market was built. A quick 77 steps up to its top and visitors get a spectacular view of the harbour and the Vancouver skyline.

To the dismay of many local residents, the “Q” tower has neither rotated nor lit up for over a year and a half now, except for a few brief moments of proper operation. Lonsdale Quay Market has been working on resolving the malfunction since the problem occurred, but has seen little luck repairing the 24 year old machine….. until now.

Lonsdale Quay Market intends to have the “Q” tower back up and running when we welcome the world for the 2010 Olympic Games.

Hands-on Learning: Capilano University Students Host Charity Event at Lonsdale Quay Market

North Vancouver, British Columbia – Business students at Capilano University received the opportunity to host a live charity event for their Event Marketing class term project at Lonsdale Quay Market.

Carolyn Stern, professor at Capilano University and owner of Carolyn Stern & Associates Inc., announced early in September that her Event Marketing class will develop, pitch and host a live charity event as their term project. “I am very excited that my students have an opportunity to be involved in the design, planning and execution of a live event. To be able to partner with a reputable company in North Shore, Lonsdale Quay Market is an incredible learning experience for the students.  They are getting hands-on experience, dealing with suppliers and the client, as well as being accountable for the budget and the overall success of the event,” says Stern, “Truly, this is the best method of teaching… by doing.”

The event, named “Christmas Under the Sea,” sponsored by North Shore News, plans to raise an estimated $5,000 for the Vancouver Aquarium, an organization dedicated to preserving aquatic life. The event will be held Saturday November 28th, 2009 between 9am and 7pm at Lonsdale Quay Market – 123 Carrie Cates Court, North Vancouver and is free of charge. Full day entertainment line up includes a Santa’s breakfast, live local musicians, interactive and educational activities fun for all ages, face painting and a magician for kids, a wine tasting event for adults and a giant balloon octopus. Hailey Morgan, a 15-year-old singer/songwriter from Langley, has been performing on stage since she was 3 and will be headlining the event. Additional music entertainment will include acoustic performances by Steve Fazzari, two pianists Mani Tayebi and Robbin Tour, as well as a drum circle to name a few. The students of Capilano University would like to invite anyone within the lower mainland to come and visit Lonsdale Quay Market on November 28th.

Thirty-six Capilano University students have been working on this event since mid-September when they were split into smaller groups and given the following instructions: develop an event concept and theme, transform the concept into a realistic event plan, and pitch the event to the client. Since then the students have been working hard to make the chosen event a success. Stern’s students have been provided with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The student run event will be hosted at Lonsdale Quay Market during the last week of November, 2009. The students will meet regularly with the Marketing Department at Lonsdale Quay Market for advice, direction and support as they move through the stages of hosting their first professional event.

This collaboration with Capilano University gives students in North Vancouver a chance to get out of the classroom and learn about the practicalities of presenting a community event. Lonsdale Quay Market is proud to be able to offer this incredible opportunity to youth in our community.

There are No Cows on Vancouver’s North Shore
The story of Vancouver’s North Shore 2010 Celebration Bear Bells

(North Vancouver) Traditionally in Europe when one attends a ski event, the noise maker of choice is a cow bell. Well, we don’t have cows on Vancouver’s North Shore, nor are there any cows in Whistler. Knowing local residents would want to make noise and demonstrate their enthusiasm this winter, a number of community groups and businesses banded together to create the most coveted item for the winter of 2010, The North Shore 2010 Celebration  Bear Bells.

“When hikers, bikers and walkers head out into the woods on Vancouver’s North Shore, most carry bear bells, ensuring the bears, which are typically very shy, hear them coming and have time to skedaddle into a tree or bush,” says Doug Smith, chair of North Vancouver’s Spirit of BC Committee. “It is not uncommon to hear the bells ringing from other hikers or their dogs. Bear bells are a way of life on the North Shore. Now they are also a fun way for the people to the North Shore to not only be ‘the scene’, but also be heard.”

A key group of North Shore residents, the Squamish First Nations people, have also embraced the Celebration Bear Bells. On Tuesday October 27th, a group of first Nations elders from the Squamish nation will meet at the top of Grouse Mountain with other “Bear Bell” partners to bless the North Shore Celebration Bear Bells and perform a traditional bear dance.

“The bear signifies strength and family,” says Chief Gibby Jacob, hereditary Chief and member of the Squamish First Nation. “Bears are revered and must be protected.”

The elders will meet at the top of Grouse Mountain to bless the bear bells which will be shared with North Vancouver residents during the coming months. 12,000 bear bells will be distributed though out the North Shore. Many of the bells will be sold at North Shore retailers, with a portion of the proceeds going to the North Shore Black Bear Society. Media guests are encouraged to attend this colourful, historical blessing ceremony.

But, why three bells? Well, there are three communities on Vancouver’s North Shore, the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver and District of West Vancouver. There are three mountains on the North Shore; Cypress, the site of many Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Para-Olympic ski events, Grouse, the home of NBC’s Today show during the Vancouver Olympics, and Seymour, a family-friendly mountain for hikers and skiers of all ages. Outdoor enthusiasts are familiar with the many activities available on these mountains, each just minutes away from downtown Vancouver. The band on the bells is green of course, to signify the mountain forests and lush green nature of Vancouver’s North Shore.

One of the mandates of the Spirit of BC Committee is to be to build on the community spirit and give local residents every opportunity to embrace the fun and excitement of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.

“By participating in the bear bell campaign, I think our North Shore neighbours will be able to cheer on our Canadian Athletes though out the winter of 2010,” says Doug. For years after, the bells will be used to keep our other neighbours, the bears of the North Shore, safe in their home environment.”

Quick access to partners in the tourism industry on the North Shore, as well as an on-line image library and HD B-roll will make Vancouver’s North Shore Tourism Association website a handy resource for any member of the media.
