Ridgeway Elementary Students Present
“Lonsdale Quay”

Mr. Palmer’s Grade 5/6 class at Ridgeway Elementary spent a day at Lonsdale Quay Market in May, each creating a piece of art which reflects their impression of Lonsdale Quay and the surrounding area.

The result is 22 individual oil pastel works, titled “Lonsdale Quay”. These works can now be viewed in vacant shop windows on the second level of Lonsdale Quay Market, and will remain on display throughout the summer.

Lonsdale Quay Market strives to support local and student artists, most recently through the installation of “Viewfinder”, a sculpture garden on the East Plaza of the Market. Other community art works include the mosaic fountain, titled “Tidal Waves”, the beautiful mosaic rotunda floor, called “Perspectives”, and the starfish-shaped bench on the waterfront plaza, “Tidal Encounters”.

Community Youth Art Project

Lonsdale Quay Market’s East Plaza is the site of a recently completed sculpture garden, created by local student artists. The project is the result of a partnership between Lonsdale Quay Market Corp. and the City of North Vancouver.

This project involved seven local student artists, who created a permanent community art installation under the direction of artist mentor James Koester.

“Viewfinder” consists of 21 galvanized wrought iron sculptures within solid metal frames that appear to hover among the spring rhododendrons along Lonsdale Quay Market’s East Plaza.

Student artists were given the opportunity to display their work in a public space, while leaving behind a legacy for the community to admire.

These are some of the perspectives offered by participating student artists:

Fernanda Seffrin, Carson Graham Secondary grad, now attending Emily Carr University: ‘Viewfinder’ is the expression of a generation composed of various backgrounds that have a common love for the North Shore and everything that this place represents in our lives. I hope more projects like this are created so that more and more people have access to such an experience!

Shamus Izatt, Carson Graham Secondary grad, entering British Columbia Institute of Technology:   ‘Viewfinder’ is the very genuine expression of several youth. It is not only a reflection of the surrounding environment, but also a blend of self proclamation. It is an inspired labour of amity and a strong aesthetic addition to Lonsdale Quay Market.

Shaghayegh Namazi, Sutherland Secondary grad, now attending Emily Carr University:    What I enjoyed the most about the process was the creative freedom and what the City of North Vancouver and in particular Lonsdale Quay Market meant to each of us, personally.

Lonsdale Quay Market is home to several public art pieces created by local youth, including the Rotunda mosaic tile floor, the starfish bench on the Waterfront Plaza, the iconic mosaic fountain, and a 100-foot mural, which will be installed in coming months.
